The Guardian Weekend
A suitable case for treatment
Day three was much more like it: the Treatment Rooms, your classic high-end urban spa. Now, if I liked this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing I'd like: no tall tales of shrunken tumours or whiff of hippy cooking; just fragrant calm on all sides. That I didn't get more out of my hour-long massage and hot stone therapy had nothing to do with Fay, my therapist, and everything to do with me. After 30 years of hardcore hedonism, your fun thermostat ineviatbly gets out of whack. On the other hand, Yv said it left her floaty and made her sleep better, and she's well-placed to judge the benefit of such things.

The Observer
The Best Spas in Britain
'An oasis of pleasure in the centre of Brighton'
The Treatment Rooms are glass-fronted like a small cosmetics shop. This spa is Scandinavian and woody - clean, new (although it has been established for several years), quiet and comfortable.
The Treatment Rooms are open late enough that you can have a bad day oozed away with an evening delight.

Oxygen Therapy at The Treatment Rooms
Ideal pre-party or for the morning after - you'll come out
looking as plumped-up and squeaky-clean as a character on the Disney Channel.
The secret is the oxygen jet they use to push the anti-ageing serums deep into the
skin. There's also a great massage to aid circulation
and drainage.
Oxygen Therapy facial, £65.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING
The Treatment Rooms
Ambience An urban
haven that's tucked away from the noise and bustle
of Brighton's town centre. Rich Moroccan-style
décor and soporific.
Highlights Half-day
mother-to-be special aromatherapy massage; Eve Lom
facials. Our tester tried The Treatment Rooms'
Ritual, £150 (3 hours), a comprehensive treatment
including exfoliation, body wrap, full body
massage with stones and a facial. The verdict:
'Solid head-to-toe-indulgence. I've never felt so
pampered.'
Aha! moment 'Feeling
as if I were miles from anywhere in a tranquil
haven.' |

ABSOLUTE BRIGHTON
Founder of The Treatment Rooms
Clare Rogers tell us her Absolute favourites in
life
My absolute destination.... Truly
anywhere that has outdoor activities and a spa
with lots of nature, very few people, no
telephones and no computers. I have been to Ille
Grande, an island off Rio - we did sea kayaking
and trekking all followed by an outdoor massage at
the end of the day. It was truly bliss.
My absolute beauty fix.... It would have
to be plenty of sleep and water followed by a
really good massage. My beauty philosophy is
prevention rather than cure, so if it ain't broke,
don't fix it!
My absolute dream car.... I don't
actually drive as I feel it is a waste of money
for me but if I did it would have to be a Mini
Cooper!

CONDÉ NAST TRAVELLER
"Location: A small spa set in an attractive, Grade-II-listed townhouse across the road from the Royal Pavilion Gardens in the centre of Brighton.
Decor: The ground-floor shop is stocked with all the products used in the spa - deliciously fragrant Eve Lom Rose cleansers and bitingly fresh geranium and myrrh essential oils by Aromatherapy Associates. The spa is up a flight of stairs lined with small ceramic sculptures from India. Walls are cream, floors are light, natural wood. There are comfy rattan chairs in the changing rooms, and wooden recliners from Kerala scattered with cushions in the candlelit relaxation room.
Credo: 'Westerners are beginning to realise that if they don't slow down and smell the roses, there is a greater risk of serious health problems. What the client wants is as many hours as possible of being pampered in a relaxing environment.'

THE GUARDIAN WEEKEND
With a job that, she admits, consists largely
of sitting on her bum, reading magazines and
shouting at the telly, Julie Burchill was
sure that massage and all that pampering was
just a con. Then she tried it...
"Apparently, people now spend some £670m annually on "alternative" "therapies" to "combat" "stress", but, my
incredulous inverted commas might suggest, "I ain't people!", to quote Lina Lamont from Singin' In The
Rain. Except it isn't people - it's women, which has always embarrassed me because it makes us look silly and suggestible.
As one who admittedly lives an extremely pleasant, underworked and overpaid life, I am incredibly
suspicious of the "stress-relieving" pampering industry, from Wax Lyrical to Brazilian waxing, and the amount of hard cash it manages to relieve us girls of.

BEAUTY UK
"On a street filled with bars and restaurants, opposite Brighton's splendid Dome Theatre and
Royal Pavilion, are The Treatment Rooms. Offering a
competitive salon service with therapies to rival the five-star destination spas, this day spa brings well-being and beauty basics to
local residents.
Founder Clare Rogers created the space from a Grade II-listed building without the help of an
architect or designer. The neutral light wood décor and off-white interior creates a blank
canvas that as you enter instantly clears your mind of stress.
The front of the salon is a spacious retail and reception area. From here you can access the ground-floor rooms which are used predominantly for Dibi facials or waxing, or the upstairs
spa-like area where there are male and female changing rooms, a gently lit relaxation room
and a further six treatment areas.
